Power Points

The Nutrition Facts Label can help you make healthful food choices.

The %DV can help you evaluate if a serving of food is high or low in a particular nutrient.

Fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium should be limited in the diet. To keep your intake as low as possible, make sure the %DV of these nutrients is less than 5%.

You should try to get enough calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C, as well as fiber. Try to average 100%DV for each one of these nutrients each day. A food item with 20% or more of these nutrients is high in those nutrients.

Sugar alcohols provide half the calories of other carbohydrates.

Your body cannot digest fiber and therefore it does not make your blood glucose level rise.

Read the ingredient list on the food label to find hidden sugar, saturated fat, and food allergens in the food. Ingredients are listed from most to least.

Foods with health claims will also have limited amounts of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

Read the food label to determine how to properly store and prepare foods.
